As we searched for a feature in our home tour series this month, our goal was to find something that celebrated the gentlemen side of things, particularly since Father’s Day is just around the corner. When we found this home in Gloucester, VA, we knew this had to be the one.
Known in Tidewater Virginia simply as “Lisburne”, this 18th century Georgian home is the epitome of a gracious gentleman’s estate. Holding 70 acres of lush gardens, green pastures, and plenty of room to play with a pool, stables, and a tennis court, Lisburne Estate is just across the York River from Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown. The respect for our country’s history is evident in the original heart pine floors, the vast collection of art and antiques displayed in the home, and the custom period designed wallpaper installed during its 1964 renovation.
Also abundantly used throughout are mixed materials such as walnut, pine, stone, and brick. All that wood makes us immediately think two words: man cave. But perhaps our favorite touch in this elegant home is the casualness it exudes, which is perfectly reflected by the comfy sofa positioned in the kitchen, of all places. Personally, we think men everywhere would approve…as do we.
Traditional decor pervades throughout, and although there is a distinct formality about the place, stuffy this house is not. We love how every room invites you to relax and take it easy. We’re hoping for the same for dads everywhere next Sunday. Take a look for yourself:
